Trekking an Adventure With Nature

I love to trek to the huge mountains, forts and the fascinating dense forests. Your destination must depend on your taste and reasoning. Reasoning means where you wish to go and for what reason you wish to go? Whether you wish to just relax or go on an adventurous trip.

There are some basic principles which you can follow to make your trekking experience memorable. Firstly decide on where you wish to go and for what long you wish to stay outdoors, a whole week, a weekend or only a day. This will help you for further preparations. The duration of the trek will decide how many equipment you have to carry with you.

Fitness is very essential element when you decide on a walking holiday. Before a trek you have to train yourself and get fit. You have to test your mental and physical ability before you decide on a trek. A right attitude and determination are very essential elements when you want to trek. Based on your ability, attitude and determination you can decide the degree of challenge you are ready to face. Always keep in mind that when you are on a long trek, there will be little or no transport to return to civilization.

A trek is totally different from a hike. A hike is a walk in the outdoors for a day or two and the path or trail in a hike is well-defined whereas a trek requires a demanding walk and the path or trail may or may not be defined. While you are on a trek often the surroundings are unknown and the trails are uncertain. You would require a map and a compass to navigate if you are on a trek. So whenever you assess yourself be practical and realistic. Also include members in your group wisely.

A trek can be divided into three general grades easy, moderate and difficult. These grades can differ depending on the fitness level and willingness of people. What one person finds easy may be difficult for the other. Thus easy, moderate and difficult are relative terms which can change from person to person. Along with the distance the difficulty level of a trek is dependent on the kind of topography, elevation and ascents. Moreover weather is another important factor. A trek can be easy in winter but you can face challenges in summer. All treks cannot be done in a given season. Some treks are possible in summer and some in winter. Not all treks can be done throughout the year.

An easy trek has well-defined tracks and are not very physically challenging. They are just for fun and relaxation. Moreover they are near to civilization and you can return back easily if need arises. Basic food and assistance from locals are usually easily available. Anybody who walks regularly and is generally in good shape can attempt an easy trek.

In case of moderate treks you have to push yourself a little beyond your comfort zone. The terrains are narrower and more demanding. They require significant amount of uphill walking and a little bit of climbing even though not technical climbing. While on a moderate trek you are away from civilization with no easy escape routes. On many moderate treks you may need to be independent with respect to food, water and other emergency supplies like medicines and first aid. Only walking would not be enough for a moderate trek. Exercising along with walking can help you to build stamina and strength for a moderate trek. Some training is required if you wish to opt for a moderate trek.

Tough or challenging treks are those which require extremely high energy levels and stamina. They require great fitness, training and prior experience of trekking. These treks are not for the inexperienced or the beginners. These treks require long uphill walks in difficult environments and conditions. They demand your stamina and determination. The area is mostly inaccessible and deserted therefore the trekkers need to be self-supporting and ready to face harsh conditions. The trekkers may have to walk on ice or through water; they may have to face strong winds and rain or extreme cold or heat depending on the weather.

Useful Tips for Novice Trekkers

Trekking has become a very popular activity among the people. They decide to trek without thinking about the difficulties which they may face on a trek. Generally new trekkers are often finding it difficult to complete the trails. Some even return with injuries and bad memories. This happens because of lack of fitness and physical capacity.

With all the experience that I have gathered while trekking here are a few useful tips for trekkers.

The first rule to follow is trek at your own pace. This will give you sufficient time to adjust with the changing weather conditions while climbing the mountains and also maintain good stamina till the end. Going at your own pace will keep you away from unnecessary exertion, overall slowdown, sickness and of course accidents. So don’t hurry.

Always keep on drinking water or energy drink in a steady manner throughout the trek. It is important to drink water or energy drink consistently and regularly when you are trekking in the mountains to avoid dehydration. Take few sips of water or energy drink after every fifteen to twenty minutes even if you don’t feel thirsty. Drinking lots of water at a time can also be harmful as it may create a pain the stomach and also make you uneasy. Eating fruits or light snacks on the way would also keep you energetic and fresh. Whatever may be the season, monsoon, summer or winter, proper intake of water and food on the way can help you complete your trek successfully.

The third but very important aspect is to keep your body warm. Don’t rest too much on your way. You will not be able to maintain your pace and stamina if you rest too much. To complete a trek with ease you have to keep on walking steadily and slowly. Resting for 5 to 10 minutes and then walking again on your terrain is perfectly OK. But you cannot stop every now and then. This is important because when you are on a high altitude trek the weather conditions change rapidly which may bog you down. If you rest too much your body will cool down. Your body will have to take extra efforts to warm up again and again which will drain you out.The next rule is mostly for those who want to complete the trek by pushing themselves too hard. When you are in the mountains you have to also enjoy the scenic beauty around you. Mountains are beautiful and so is the surrounding. So when your body starts dehydration and you feel too much exhausted don’t continue with the trek. This shows that you are not fit to move ahead. You can rest for that day and then start again the next day. You cannot risk your health just to prove that you can complete the trek in given time period. You can face acute mountain sickness if you trek beyond your physical capacity.

When you trek you obviously carry your own stuff in your rucksack. Everyone has to carry their own baggage while climbing the mountains. But if you are not fit for carrying weight you have to practice it before the trek starts. Two three months of practice is required to be physically fit to carry the baggage on your own. In case of high altitude treks this practice is a must.

The next important thing is packing the bags to the destination. Whenever you are on a trek, you have to carry all essential things with you. Things like food, snacks, water bottles, energy drinks if required, medicines, pair of extra clothes (depending upon number of days), shoes, socks, cap, sunglasses, sandals, torch, sleeping mat or bag, walking sticks, camera, binoculars and much more as instructed by your mentor.

Once you have decided on a trek, start practicing for it. Practicing means you have to start walking daily for at least 3 to 4 kilometers. You can also go for gym to strengthen your body muscles particularly your legs. If not then yoga is also a good option for flexibility and strength. Walking is very important part of practicing. Along with that you can either opt for gym or yoga depending on your choice. Practice walking with the clothes, shoes and socks which you are going to wear on the day of trek. Also try to walk with the rucksack in which you are going to carry all the trekking stuff. This would help you on the actual day of trek to carry the load without any difficulty.

Practicing and keeping yourself fit will help you enjoy the trek along with magnificence of nature on the way. If you go on the trek without practicing then you will get tired and exhausted as your energy level would go down. Walking, exercising and meditating can help you to increase your physical as well as mental strength. Fitness is very important when it comes to any kind of adventure. A trekker should always try to be fit and strong because he or she has to face challenges on his way. These challenges may be unexpected.
